About Ocean Beach
The area of Ocean Beach is a vibrant, bohemian neighborhood, that comes along with a classic SoCal beach atmosphere. The place lies on the Pacific Ocean at the estuary of the San Diego River. The area is located just 7 mi or 11 km northwest of Downtown San Diego, it sits south of Mission Bay and Mission Beach and directly north of Point Loma.
This is a wide sandy beach that has formed on the south side of the San Diego River mouth. Looking north you can see the neighborhood of Mission Beach on the other side of the rock jetties that protect the Mission Bay Entrance Channel. Within the place, you can also find the extensive tide pools that are exposed at low tide below the pier to the south.
There is also the extreme north end of this beach called Dog Beach and it’s overrun with happy pooches. There are two parking lots and they tend to fill up fast on weekends, so you might have to settle for on-street parking near here. The Ocean Beach Bike Path runs inland along the river from here for bikers and runners.
If you want to see San Diego’s Grateful Dead cover band, just come to Winston’s every Monday night to check out the Electric Waste Band. Every Wednesday, there is the Farmer’s Market on the main drag off Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon streets. O.B. also puts on the OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off in the summer, Fourth of July Fireworks over the pier, and Oktoberfest in the fall,
South of the OB Pier is Sunset Cliffs, one of the most photogenic sunset spots in all of San Diego and the perfect way to end the day on a romantic getaway. Between the cliffs, surf and sun, the photo opportunities are only limited by your imagination. In the photos, you’ll see our photo tour of a fabulous sunset on a high wave/ high tide day. The daytime blue fade to an orangey red sunset, and then the purples return once the sun drops over the horizon.
