About Mount Helix

Casa de Oro-Mount Helix is considered a census-designated place located in the East County region of San Diego County, California. The area of the place covers a few of the unincorporated neighborhoods situated near the cities of El Cajon and La Mesa and the CDP of Spring Valley. The place is also known by the name “Jewel of the Hills”, and completely treasuring and embracing the past and history.
The place started when Robert Allison bought thousands of acres in the region in the year 1869. He helped bring water and the railroad to the area, known as Allison Springs. The place itself actually got its name very interestingly. Back then, the area was first mentioned in newspapers as La Mesa Springs and La Mesa Colony. In the year 1891, the place got a post office established within, having its name shortened to only La Mesa.
Mount Helix, on the other hand, got its name after the Helix aspersa snail found within the place, which was a rare find at the time. In the year 1906, the community began transforming into a more residential community. On the year 1911, the place then became a moviemaking mecca when Allan Dwan filmed about 150 silent “flickers.” The community was officially incorporated in 1912.
Aside from being a great and attractive place to tour, the area also has several specialties that people may want to consider looking forward to. La Mesa has been hosting the region’s largest Oktoberfest for more than 40 years. Apart from that, Mount Helix has practically the best panoramic view from its summit. Aside from pictures, they can be a great place to spend some time with family, friends, and loved ones.
The area has a really deep connection with its past and history, this is further proved by the two museums near, the 1899 McKinney House also known now as the La Mesa Historical Society and the 1894 La Mesa Train Depot. There is also a system of public stairways from the place, known as the Secret Stairs located in the Mount Nebo/Windsor Hills neighborhood.
